Derek Woolner is a former Director of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Group in the Australian Parliament. He has served as a Visiting Fellow at the Australian Defence Studies Centre of the Australian Defence Force Academy and a Visiting Fellow at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, ANU.

His research interests focus on the formulation and implementation of defence and national security policy. He has written widely on military capability development and systems performance and financial and procurement management.
