Shahidur Rahman is Professor of Sociology in the Department of Economics & Social Sciences at BRAC University, Bangladesh. He completed a PhD in Sociology at Monash University, and a BSS and an MSS degree in Sociology from the University of Dhaka.

One of his leading publications is “Broken Promises of Globalization: The case of the Bangladesh Garment Industry” – a book published by Lexington Books in 2014. Shahidur was a panel speaker at a conference on “Bangladesh Development 2015” organised by the South Asia Institute, Harvard University.

He is involved in a three-year research project on “Changes in Governance in garment production network” in collaboration with the London School of Economics, the University of New South Wales, the Freie University and the University of Gothenburg funded by Volkswagen Foundation. In order to understand the impact of the Rana Plaza disaster on the governance of garment supply chains, this research analyses changes in lead firm policies and practices relating to these standards across four countries – Australia, UK, Germany and Sweden. Shahidur is also the Lead Researcher to develop a National Plan of Action on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) for the industrial sectors of Bangladesh.
