Wesley Widmaier is an Associate Professor in the Department of International Relations in the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs at the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific.

His Political Economy research addresses the interplay of ideas, institutions, and interests, in particular the ways in which the ‘lessons’ of past crises have been over-learned and obscured sources of future crises.

He has engaged these concerns in journals spanning Review of International Political Economy, New Political Economy, and International Studies Quarterly – and book-length form in Economic Ideas in Political Time: The Rise and Fall of Economic Orders from the Progressive Era to the Global Financial Crisis (Cambridge University Press, 2016).

His security research similarly examines how wars are constructed as having ‘lessons’ that obscure sources of renewed conflict. He has developed these insights in articles in the European Journal of International Relations and International Relations – and in book-length form in Presidential Rhetoric from Wilson to Obama: Constructing Crises, Fast and Slow (Routledge, 2015).

Widmaier is a past Section Chair of the International Political Economy section of the International Studies Association and is lead editor of the journal Review of International Political Economy.
