The embassies for both countries (in Suva) had active public affairs officers in the past and both focused heavily on interaction with media, promoting media freedom and organising media visits to Australia and the US. Slowly, but surely, the focus changed with younger “diplomats” being posted to the Embassy/High Commission in Suva and media focus gave way to interaction at the social and social media level. China has simply filled the void. Given the financial limitations of local television stations, China, Japan, Turkey, and Russia have moved in to offer their own programs. The ABC and TVNZ get air time but on secondary platforms or at low viewership times. As it is, Fijians probably know more about what’s happening in the US, Korea and the Middle East than they know about what’s the main issues in Australia.
