IPCC Special Report on Climate Change & Land: implications for Australia

On 8th August 2019, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will release their Special Report on Climate Change and Land. It will cover desertification, land degradation, sustainable land management, food security, and greenhouse gas fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems.

This event will consist of a presentation by Prof Mark Howden followed by audience Q&A. Mark will discuss interactions between climate change and the land, including climate change impacts on agricultural productivity, food security and biodiversity. He will explore the implications of the report for Australia, covering policy and land management responses for reversing land degradation, improving economic returns, crop yields, nutrition, climate adaptation and mitigation.

Prof Mark Howden is Director of the ANU Climate Change Institute. He is also an Honorary Professor at Melbourne University, a Vice-Chair of the IPCC and a member of the Australian National Climate Science Advisory Committee and the ACT Climate Change Council. Mark has worked on climate variability, climate change, innovation and adoption issues for over 30 years in partnership with industry, community and policy groups via both research and science-policy roles.
