Mongols at the edges of Mongolia

The boundaries of nation states often do not follow ethnic lines. The Mongol Empire, in its efforts at world conquest, has spread Mongolic peoples in many places. There are nine million Mongols today, but only just over three million of them live in Mongolia. Over 4.5 million are in China, over a million in Russian Federation, some in Afghanistan and other parts of the world. Most of them adapted to the political and economic systems of the country in which they live, but most of them still identify themselves with Chinggis Khan and the Mongol Empire to some extent. However, preserving language and culture is becoming an acute issue in many communities.

This conference aims to discuss and analyse social, cultural, economic and linguistic issues that these communities face. Speakers include academics from Republic of Buryatia, Republic of Kalmykia, Russian Federation, Inner Mongolia, China and Mongolia.
