The New Geoeconomic World Order

How are economics and security colliding in the US-China tech/trade war? How will this reshape the field of international economic law?

We appear to be entering into a new geoeconomic world order, characterised by great power rivalry between the United States and China and the clear use of economic tools to achieve strategic goals. We can see this battle playing out in the headlines all around, whether it is stories about the China-US tech/trade war or the battle over Huawei and who will control 5G.

The increased convergence of economic and security thinking is posing clear challenges to both the laws and institutions that govern international trade and investment. This talk tracks the emergence of this new order, considers some of its causes and looks at where states are likely to go from here in addressing these economic and security challenges.

About the speaker

Anthea Roberts is a Professor at the School of Regulation and Global Governance who specialises in public international law, international economic law, comparative international law and geoeconomics. She is chairing the ANU CAP Geoeconomics Working Group and regularly presents to governments about issues relating to international law and geoeconomics.
