Im so sick of the argument that sex work is empowering, it clearly isnt for all sex workers. People say its empowering but no one want it for their daughters, sisters, mothers or themselves! Sex workers are being murdered, why? Because we refuse to say men shouldnt have the right to pay for sex. Pretending that sex work is empowering doesnt help sex workers, its time for change.

“some feminists are siding with pimps and sex industry profiteers” portrays a villainized version of feminists who are supporting womxn claiming a right to their bodies, their sexuality, and a right to protection under the law. It’s a shame this article is so dismissive rather than engaging with differing ideas and solutions.

The worker who stated that ‘murder was part of our job’ is actually from Melbourne, not Sydney. She also is just one person in the industry who does not represent the voice of our community. Many of us do not believe that murder is a part of our job and her public statement just perpetuates existing discriminatory ideas of who we are and how the industry operates.
You argue that the only voices being heard are the privileged white voices who aren’t ashamed of their sexuality and recognise the privilege they have to be out and proud as a sex workers and we are not hearing from victims, but this industry is huge and there are plenty of POC and non able-bodied gender diverse activists speaking out against the dichotomy of victim/empowered discourse that exists, but perhaps you’re not listening to them. Their voices go against your opinion so what would that achieve if you were to amplify their voices? Sexual labour should be recognised as labour, there are plenty of other jobs that have the same physical risks (mining etc.); the same levels of intimacy (nurse, childcare worker etc.); as well as the same level of objectification (HELLO CHILD MODELS) but its easier to throw sex workers under the bus due to the existing stigma.

It is very disturbing and barbaric that sex work still exsits.
