Nice article.
I’m Indonesian Muslim. I could understand your writing, from your perspective.

But, to understand Islam and Indonesia relationship, you should trace it back all the way before Indonesia itself existed.

It’s Islamic movement together with nationalists who fought alongside to fight colonialism in our land back on 1945-1949.

Democracy is never been our goal.
As you aware that Indonesia have Pancasila as a “dasar negara” and 1st stated “Belief in the one and only God”
Indonesian have no problem with different religions, since we are multi religions country.
But, when your religion is mocked, twisted, on public, especially by the people who supposedly speak and act behave according to his high position/level (as a governor).
Then it’s all happened.

That’s why I said that democracy is never been our goal. Democracy is only one pillar of our Pancasila.

If I may suggest you, in order to know Indonesia legal/policy/constitution you should study more about Islam in Indonesia and Pancasila philosophy.

Best regards,
