You think the US could tolerate a left wing or communist government in Central America? It is just as unfortunate that the US decided to hand over the Diaoyu Islands to Japan after they finished using it for practice bombing runs. Nothing in history suggests it belonged to Japan. It was just an administrative decision by the US at a time when China was too weak to challenge it.
