APPS Conference 2014 – opening address

Professor Tom Kompas, President, Asia and the Pacific Policy Society, Director Crawford School of Public Policy at The Australian National University, Mat Kimberley, Assistant Secretary, PNG Development and Solomon Islands Branch, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Tikki Pangestu, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore gave this opening address at the Asia and the Pacific Policy Society Conference in September 2014.

Non-communicable and water-borne diseases rank among the most daunting challenges affecting the health and development prospects of people in the Pacific Islands. The Asia and the Pacific Policy Society conference ‘Confronting the region’s health challenges‘ held on 17-18 September 2014 explored practical policy options for governments concerned to address these challenges,  including what public finance, regulatory, health system and whole of government issues these options involve, and what development partners and regional institutions can do to help.
